Belfast Irish Milers Meet: 2022 event joins World Athletics Continental Tour

The Belfast Irish Milers Meet 2022 will be part of World Athletics’ Continental Tour series in a huge boost for the May 14 event.

This year’s event had European license status for the first time and has now received a major new upgrade with Thursday’s news.

Meeting director Eamonn Christie said he was “overwhelmed and thrilled” by the development.

Christie has received accolades for her staging of the competition in recent years.

“I would like to take this opportunity to thank Pierce O’Callaghan, World Athletics competition management manager, for all of his help and advice in helping to cross the line,” Christie told BBC Sport Northern Ireland.

“My track and field competition is really in its infancy compared to some of the major track and field competitions on the World Athletics Continental Tour.”

As this year’s meeting approached, his European license status seemed threatened at one point following an invention by Athletic Ireland, but the paperwork issue was then resolved and the event took off. proved to be a huge success as Briton Alexandra Bell and Irish sprinter Phil Healy put in some remarkable performances.

Bell then set a personal best in the 800m of 1: 58.52, which helped her make it to the Olympic Games in Tokyo, where she ran brilliantly to advance to the final of the two-round event. .

The Leeds woman has already vowed to return to the event in 2022 with Healy among several members of the Irish Olympic team also set to compete on the Mary Peters track in May.

In addition to the improved status of the Belfast Irish Milers Meet, the Antrim Coast Half Marathon has also been reclassified to World Athletics ‘Elite’ status on the World Governing Body’s running calendar.

Ethiopia’s Yalemzerf Yehualaw appears to have set a new women’s world record for the distance at this year’s event in Larne, but the mark was not ratified after the course was short of 54 meters.

The news of the ‘Elite’ event sees him move from the Road Race Label Series category.
