black midi shares wild “Sugar/Tzu” video and expands North American tour

british band noon black release their new album, Hellfire, this week, and just before that, they shared the video for “Sugar/Tzu.” Directed by Noel Paul, the video for this frenetic, jazzy track features talking monkeys, boxing matches and other wild and intense imagery.

Greep of the band says the song and video “imagine that in the year 2163, it’s possible to see a championship fight between two 600-pound men. Although in a so-called “Leadweight” division. The fight is between Sun Sugar and Sun Tzu; the latter being a fan of the Chinese general, hoping to channel his strength; and the former seeks to continue the line of Sugar Ray Robinson, Leonard, etc. You can watch the video and learn more about the track below.

You can see Black Midi on tour this summer and autumn, including dates with another UK band Black country, new road and What Chris. They just added a few more shows including Austin, Pittsburgh and Toronto. Dates include Asbury Lanes from Asbury Park on July 23 with keiyaA and a free New York show at SummerStage in Central Park on July 24 with Sal Valentinetti and Sarah squirms. All dates are listed below.

“Sugar/Tzu” “imagine that in 2163, it’s possible to see a title fight between two 600-pound men. Albeit in a so-called ‘Leadweight’ division,” Greep explains. “The fight is between Sun Sugar and Sun Tzu; the latter being a fan of the Chinese general, hoping to channel his strength; and the former seeking to continue the line of Sugar Ray Robinson, Leonard, etc.

“Present at their battle is a young boy who stands just over a meter tall. At ringside, he briefly exchanges a look with Sun Sugar, who, perhaps in an attempt to inspire, approaches the boy and shakes his hand. It is then revealed, as the contestant returns to action, that the boy is actually a killer. He pulls a small gun out of his small jacket and shoots the man in the back, honor be damned. The boy thinks this is not a cruel act, but a virtuous one, his interference providing the audience with the ultimate and rare entertainment.

“As Sun Sugar arrives on deck, the crowd cheers and shouts, believing this is just the result of a particularly vicious shot by Sun Tzu.

“There is a little joke here. It is normal for a boxing public to lament an early stoppage, with the official stepping in to save a fighter who could have continued. And while there’s a superficial agreement for most that “it was the right thing to do”, it often seems left unsaid that we actually want to see a brutal knockout. And in the split second that those unique, perfect, coma-inducing shots happen, there’s an undeniable rush. The boy in this story feels like a hero for giving the crowd what they really want. That’s not to say the song is a criticism of boxing or anything like that – I love the sport – but it’s an interesting and rare phenomenon worth exploring.
