At a WMSC meeting on October 19, an updated Formula E calendar was ratified, along with the dates for Valencia’s pre-season testing in Valencia from December 13-16.
The original draft schedule unveiled after the WMSC meeting in June had three time slots to be confirmed, with the already agreed Cape Town E-Prix not on the tentative schedule.
The race will take place on the previously vacant date of February 25, two weeks after the inaugural Hyderabad E-Prix.
Formula E CEO Jamie Reigle later told Autosport the omission of Cape Town was simply because the championship organizers wanted to wait until they had certainty on the south-east event. African.
The championship remains committed to finding a race in the United States following the scrapping of the New York E-Prix, as the Brooklyn cruise terminal and surrounding area hosting the event is under development.
With the stillborn Vancouver E-Prix project canceled last season after promoter OSS Group failed to obtain the necessary clearances from the local government, the only North American representation currently is the opening of the season in Mexico City on January 14.
“We are delighted to announce Cape Town as the new destination for our series in Season 9,” said Formula E Championship Director Alberto Longo.
“Our local partners are hard at work bringing an ABB FIA Formula E World Championship race to the city and we can’t wait to see the futuristic Gen3 racing cars go head-to-head against the iconic natural backdrop of Table Mountain.

“Renovation work at the Olympic Stadium in Seoul, the venue for our first races in South Korea earlier this year, means we cannot return to the same location next season as originally planned and we are therefore exploring other options in South Korea to replace this place..
“We are also in active talks with other cities and locations around the world to hold an event on the other date with no confirmed location.”
The March 11 slot has been discarded in favor of a second Berlin E-Prix, to be held on April 23, while the slot vacated by Seoul will tentatively host a single-event race on May 20.
Formula E is apparently looking for an alternative event in South Korea, and the June 24 slot also remains empty for now.
Going forward, Formula E has also signed a memorandum of understanding to potentially hold a race in Tokyo in 2024, around the Tokyo Big Sight exhibition grounds, to boost the city’s zero-emissions initiatives.
