TV advertising to communicate the wonders of paintings


Nippon Paint Holdings Co., Ltd. (Headquarters: Chuo-ku, Tokyo) will launch a new TV commercial, “From the Nippon Paint Town – The World is Constantly Filled with Color” on Monday, October 25, 2021.

Restrictions due to the pandemic have prevented people from going out and enjoying a world filled with color. However, the company is finally starting to open up again. We created a new TV commercial based on the concept of finding the wonders of color in our lives and the allure of painting. The 1/50 scale miniatures of the imaginary Nippon Paint Town, including buildings created with paint cans and bridges made from brushes, make this ad enjoyable to watch over and over again.

The ad was created without infographics using stop motion frame-by-frame animation while manually moving the thumbnails bit by bit. Enjoy the unique retro-futuristic world of Nippon Paint Town, which is full of little tricks and evokes nostalgic and heartwarming memories of the Showa era while expressing hope for the future.

The new “From the Nippon Paint Town” commercial follows our previous “From the Nippon Paint Room” commercial, which showed viewers that the excitement and fascination of paint and its functions goes beyond the mere addition of color. In our new ad, we jump into the outside world. Miniatures of the park and streetscape of Nippon Paint Town glow in the morning sun that awakens animals and plants. The whole city, with miniatures of buildings and structures painted in bright colors that communicate the allure of painting, begins a new day. The ad script explains, with a warm touch, the connections between the colors we see in our daily lives and society to inspire viewers to rediscover the joys and hopes that surround them. The final scene shows a person drawing a rainbow arching over Nippon Paint Town, sending the message that the future is filled with colorful possibilities.

This commercial was shot by dwarf stop motion animation studio, which creates animations including character animations for NHK, the Japanese public broadcaster. By meticulously moving the miniatures millimeter by millimeter and scene by scene, using tweezers and other instruments, the team brought the miniatures to life. The miniatures were painted with 23 different paint colors by Nippon Paint. The 30-second animation was produced by connecting approximately 800 still images. Through a filming of over 90 hours, the crew expertly portrayed the world of miniatures, which stands between live action and CG animation.

The song reflects Mr. Yamazaki’s belief that “eventually the rain stops and a beautiful rainbow appears above us. I wish to hear the dreams you harbor and the future you envision when we will have overcome the challenges that lie ahead. ” This song expresses the universe of Nippon Paint Town.
