Romanians could establish their first monastic community in Japan

The Romanian parish priest of Tokyo shared a thought of the Romanian Orthodox community in Japan regarding the “St. Andrew’s” International Orthodox Center in Kitakaruizawa: “Perhaps, if it were God’s will, this center would become the seat of a small monastic community, the first in Japan”, said Father Daniel Corîu.

“The idea for the St. Andrew’s International Orthodox Center was born out of a desire to spend time together in nature and in the fresh air. The retreats we do every year in the mountains have planted in our minds and in our hearts the desire to have such a place of our own, where we cannot go once a year whenever we want”, explained the father Daniel Corîu on the new site of the Romanian Orthodox parish in Tokyo.

In August 2021, the community purchased a forest of about 1,000 square meters at the foot of Mount Asama in the Kitakaruizawa area.

“We were able to draw up the sketch of a complex of approximately 400 m². This complex includes a large dining room, common areas, a chapel and ten bedrooms,” says parish priest Daniel Corîu.

“From the idea of using it only for our retreat, we thought that maybe, if it was God’s will, this center would become the seat of a small monastic community, the first in Japan. In this way, St Andrew’s International Orthodox Center aims to become both a center for physical and spiritual recreation.

To this end, an online fundraiser has been launched.

The Romanian community in Tokyo has also purchased land in Minami-Alps in Yamanashi Prefecture, where it will establish an Orthodox cemetery for Orthodox believers of any nationality residing in Japan.

The Romanian parish in Tokyo was founded 12 years ago. Tokyo Parish Church was dedicated on November 3, 2020 and is dedicated to Saint George the Trophy Bearer.

The parish has in its patrimony particles of the relics of Saints George, Catherine, Nectarios, Porphyrios and Philothea.

A Romanian Orthodox community also exists in Osaka.
