Stoiximan AegeanBall Festival 2022: a great tournament for Syros and the community

ATHENS – The Stoiximan AegeanBall Festival team guided its guests to the secret and most authentic places of the island of Syros, giving them the opportunity to discover the beauty of its landscapes, the flavors of its rich gastronomy, the culture as well as the kindness and hospitality of the residents, from July 6 to 10. Over 6,000 people in five days visited the event’s basketball courts in Miaouli Square, with the towering view of Ermoupolis City Hall serving as a landmark and backdrop.

Sports tourism and the community of Syros have grown!

From impressive squares and aristocratic mansions, municipal buildings and picturesque chapels of Orthodox and Catholic churches to museums, historical monuments, beaches, fairy-tale neighborhoods and traditional flavors, Syros was at the center of the world basketball map putting highlight the island. sports and culture.

The Stoiximan AegeanBall Festival filled the whole island with people of all ages, adults and children, amateur and professional sportsmen, and especially sports enthusiasts. At the same time, the event shone a spotlight on sports tourism in Syros, as it brought visitors to hotels for their stay on the island for at least the five days of the event.

Stoiximan AegeanBall Festival 2022 made its historic return after three years, Georgios Printezis’ vision once again made Ermoupolis the capital of basketball and donated more than 20,000 euros to children’s centers and nurseries in the hospital of Syros.

On Miaouli Square, from early morning until evening, the sound of basketball resounded, giving a unique sporting aura to the cosmopolitan capital of the Cyclades. Over 80 teams of all ages competed in all categories, creating great stories, showcasing impressive talent and further developing the passion for the sport. The Elite category, where professional athletes from all over Greece competed, stood out for another year. Its winners, four young teammates from the FEA New Philadelphia team, managed to lift the trophy and competed with Georgios Printezis and his main guests in a Pan-Hellenic television show.

The Stoiximan AegeanBall Festival 2022 started its first evening with the VIP League – the championship of the great Greek and European athletes, with the participation of Olympians and important guests. Saturday evening, as soon as the moon appeared above Ano Syros, Ermoupolis welcomed its guests of honor.

Olympians and champions graced the event

Olympic gold and bronze medalist on rings, three-time world champion and five-time European champion Lefteris Petrounias, Tokyo 2020 Olympic gold medalist and European rowing champion Stefanos Ntouskos, Olympic silver medalist, world champion in open water swimming and international swimming marathon The Hall of Fame Spyros Gianniotis and Vassiliki Millousi, with three participations in the Olympic Games and numerous distinctions in the World, European and Mediterranean Gymnastics Championships, have shone and honored the event with their presence and participation in the celebration of basketball in Syros.

Double European champion and EuroLeague Final-4 MVP Vasilije Micić, EuroLeague legends Dimitris Diamantidis, Theodoros Papaloukas and Joe Arlauckas, one of Europe’s best centers Nikola Milutinov, European champion with the Greek national team and Real Madrid Giannis Bourousis, one of the best European strikers Kostas Tsartsaris, this year’s best player of the Greek basketball league and member of the EuroLeague 5 best players Sasha Vezenkov, and Giorgos Papagiannis, a member of this year’s top 5 Greek basketball league players, came to Syros for the VIP League All-Star Game.

Participants at this year’s event included Giannis Athinaiou, Giannoulis Larentzakis, Dimitris Agravanis, Dimitris Katsivelis, Michalis Lountzis, Christos Saloustros, Linos Chrysikopoulos, Katerina Sotiriou, Dimitris Moraitis, Nikos Persidis, Nikos Gkikas, Eleanna Christinaki, Giannis Agravanis, Katerina Spatharou, Panagiotis Christoforos, Katerina Chalikia, Stella Fouraki, Georgia Veloudou, Stefania Patera, Minas Papagiannis, Vassilis Karahalios, Konstantinos Papadakis, George Kopsidas and Nikos Chouchoulis.

Completion of the first group stage allowed the Head and Shoulders rings of Petrounias, Chrysikopoulos, Gkikas, Sotiriou and the Elite winners to take the lead and advance to the final. In addition, the “Agorakia Lemarga” team proved to be very strong while facing high level athletes. Greece national team international basketball player Gkikas made a great appearance and gave victory to his teammates with a score of 11-10, winning the first big cup.

Giannis Bourousis was named MVP

On Sunday, the FlexCar Lions were the main leaders in the All-Star Game Grand Finals. Bourousis, Larentzakis, Chalikia and Papadakis won with a score of 19-11 against Stoiximan Warriors of Printezis, Diamantidis, Christinaki, Karahalios and Stoiximan CEO George Daskalakis and were applauded by the whole island. Bourousis, 38, has been named Flexcar MVP of the Stoiximan AegeanBall Festival 2022, with the great veteran and much-loved player winning the institution’s new Most Valuable Player award for the first time.

Georgios Printezis was awarded by the Mayor of Syros – Ermoupolis Livadaras with a laurel wreath plaque, symbolizing the Olympic values, as well as by the Cyclades Regional Deputy Governor George Leontaritis and Stoiximan CEO George Daskalakis. The initiator of the Stoiximan AegeanBall Festival was also honored by the organizing company Progame, and its president Fanis Xintavelonis as well as its CEO Giannis Laskaris with a unique painting. An honorary prize was presented by the regional vice-governor of the Cyclades, Leontaritis, to Real Madrid legend Joe Arlauckas, the oldest participant in the event at 56 years old.

The event returned and took place for the fourth time in what was envisioned as a celebration of sports tourism for children and parents, athletes and fans of Syros #WeAreSyros.
