June 20 (Reuters) – Geraint Thomas has said he is ready to help one of his Ineos Grenadiers team-mates win the Tour de France next month, but if a chance for victory presents itself to the Welshman he won’t had no intention of letting her pass.

The 36-year-old, who won the Tour de France in 2018, became the first Briton to win the Tour de Suisse on Sunday, finishing three seconds behind stage winner Remco Evenepoel to edge Sergio Higuita in the general classification and win the victoire.

As the race was badly affected by COVID-19, the victory marks a turnaround for Thomas, who thought he had “done something wrong in a past life” after falls at the Tokyo Olympics and at the Tour de France last year. Read more

“Du Tour (de France) last year at the end of the season was…probably one of the most difficult periods of my career,” said Thomas.

“This year I started off slightly on the back foot, but really enjoyed racing and being with the young guys on the team and building.

“I just want to go (to the Tour de France) and race hard and do what I can. We have two other leaders in the team and if I can stay in the GC (general classification) for a while to play another map , or go for steps, or help other guys, whatever.

“I’m just happy to do anything. Take a chance if it comes up, help the boys if I have to.”
