Tour de France winner Vingaard back in action at CRO Race

The organizers of the CRO race have announced that Tour de France winner Jonas Vingaard will be among the riders on the starting line for the UCI 2.1 rated race when it begins on September 27.

Egan Bernal (Ineos Grenadiers) and Majej Mohorič (Bahrain Victorious) are also on the provisional starting list.

The CRO Race has yet to announce its full roster of teams, but Trek-Segafredo is expected to field a team, as is Israel-Premier Tech, which is in the throes of the hunt for WorldTour points.

Vingaard has not raced since becoming the first Danish Tour de France champion since Bjarne Riis. He missed the Denmark circuit last month and withdrew from the UCI Road World Championships in Wollongong, Australia next week.

The decision angered the Danish federation, which missed out on Vingaard’s appearance at the Tokyo Olympics last year after a difficult Tour de France.

“I had a dialogue with Jumbo-Visma before and after the Tour de France. And after the Tour, they announced firmly that it was not part of the plans for Vingaard to participate in the World Championships”, recently declared the Danish coach Anders Lund. Television 2 Sports.

“I always want all the professionals to stand up and put their hands up and want to ride for the national team, so I would also have liked to see Vingaard in the group of riders who want to race the world championships. But I take into account, and I can see from the team that it will be more than effective anyway. So I sleep well at night.

It has been suggested that Vingegaard has struggled to adjust to his status as Tour de France champion, with Jumbo-Visma manager Frans Maassen indicating the Dane has had ‘a very difficult time’ since sealing the yellow jersey.

“We would have liked to show it in the Tour of Denmark, but we also have to understand that it was difficult to win the Tour de France, with all that goes with it,” said Maassen.

Bernal, meanwhile, is continuing his low-key return to racing after a near-fatal accident in January, when he raced at full speed into the back of a stopped city bus while training on his mountain bike. against the watch.

He is expected to join Jonathan Castroviejo, Michał Kwiatkowski, Geraint Thomas and Elia Viviani in the Croatia squad.
