UT swimmer, Olympian fundraising for Austin’s LGBT+ community

Erica Sullivan is raising money for Out Youth Austin through GoFundMe’s “College Charity Challenge”.

AUSTIN, Texas – Texan swimmer and Olympic silver medalist Erica Sullivan is currently raising funds for Austin’s LGBTQIA+ community, especially Our youth. This is part of GoFundMe’s “College Charity Challenge” which encourages student-athletes to use their platform to effect positive change.

“Having these lowest lows of my life, I came out the other side not only wanting to be a better athlete, but to be a better person,” Erica Sullivan told KVUE’s Tyler Feldman in a post. Zoom interview Thursday night.

“Because of that, I really took it to heart to use my platform for good. Ultimately, the Olympic medal will stay with me for the rest of my life, but I feel like what I’m pride is the ability to change the lives of others.”

GoFundMe contacted Sullivan to participate and said she would pass the challenge on to another student-athlete after this week. However, his GoFundMe page will remain online until further notice, she said.

Sullivan’s original goal was to raise $1,000, but by Thursday night the figure was well over $1,300.

Out Youth Austin has been a grassroots organization for more than 30 years whose mission is “to promote the physical, mental, and emotional well-being of sexual-minority youth in central Texas so that they can explore and affirm their identity openly and in safe”.

This organization is close to Sullivan’s heart because she herself identifies with the LGBTQIA+ community.

Sullivan told KVUE that this cause is so important because of the challenges transgender people face every day, especially in Texas.

Her goal is to bring care and resources to those who are voiceless within her queer community. She also said the top donor will win a Team USA hat signed by who else, Erica Sullivan.

After winning silver in the 1,500-meter freestyle at the Tokyo Olympics, Sullivan said her focus will be on UT, where she is studying to one day become a writer/director. She hopes to help UT Swimming win the NCAA in her final two collegiate seasons. She also plans to train for the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris.
