Learning to swim is an essential life skill that helps children and adults be more confident, safer and more proficient in the water and can ultimately save lives. As a sport, swimming is unique with health and social benefits from birth and opportunities in a range of aquatic disciplines and water sports.

For parents, encouraging your child to learn to swim is one of the most important skills you will teach them. If you get kids swimming when they’re young, chances are they’ll enjoy the water for the rest of their lives and stay fit and healthy.

Duncan commented: “I am very much looking forward to visiting Orkney and seeing the children benefit from the learn to swim programs offered there as part of the Scottish Swimming Scottish Water Learn to Swim Framework, but also taking part in a club training session where I hope I can offer some good advice to young Orkney swimmers!

James Linklater, Managing Director of the Pickaquoy Centre, said: “We are absolutely delighted to have Duncan Scott come to Orkney, and what a great opportunity for our young swimmers to talk and swim with such a successful athlete.

“Given his recent success at the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham and the fact that he has become Scotland’s most decorated competitor at any Commonwealth Games, Duncan is among the finest athletes of our time.

“We look forward to welcoming him to ‘Picky’ and hope he enjoys his visit.”

Councilor Gwenda Shearer is Chair of the Orkney Islands Council’s Education, Leisure and Housing Committee. She said: “What a pleasure for these young people to meet Duncan, who for our young swimmers, especially those involved in competitive swimming, will be an absolute inspiration.

“The Learn to Swim program has been a resounding success in Orkney. These young swimmers we see competing in competitions, galas and even inter-county meet-and-greets all started their journeys with swimming lessons at our local facilities.

“Orkney has a tremendous tradition of producing fantastic swimmers and I hope the opportunity to meet their hero will inspire the next generation to do even bigger things in the pool, all the more important as time is running out for that the Island Games are coming to Orkney in 2025.”
